Stay away from OVH.

Just a heads up to anyone using OVH.

Edge firewall does not apply firewall rules for internal traffic, so any internal system(I.e a script kiddy with a cheap OVH VPS can perform attacks on your dedicated or VPS server.

To see for yourself, recently, OVH have had issues with internal attacks, where attacks attempting to brute force SSH, etc, have originated internally. Edge firewall will not help you, so don’t rely on it.

To see for yourself, you can view authorisation logs, or use a logging tool to track said items.

Further to this issue, a lot of attacks are now also internal dos/ddos attacks to neighbouring systems, which I have had to deal with now a couple of times.

I am moving the remaining infrastructure I have away from OVH asap as their support could literally care-less.

Isn't that what fail2ban is for? Surely it would be nice for providers to filter this out or repel, but I operate under the assumption that my machines have to fight for themselves where possible, and fail2ban seems like a mandatory weapon.

I'm not sure what OVH is exactly doing, but yesterday I got notified of an ongoing attack. When I checked the machine, all I saw was that the banlist had grown substantially. SSHd is on no-root, only-key and fail2ban on aggressive.

Besides that, automated reporting of abuse to OVH can be effective, I've learned the hard way. VPS got ruptured within seconds of being automatically reported (had a stupid misconfig when running a test).

OVH caused many issues when I used their service. Their support is poor, unresponsive, and unhelpful. Additionally, their dedicated server prices are unreasonable. The only provider I fully trust is Hetzner.

+1 to steer clear of them for dedis. Their hardware failure rate is totally unacceptable, and the support recovery time for hardware issues is ridiculous. I think the problem with their hardware is it's all built using the lowest quality possible = they boast about building all their hardware custom themselves, but it seems the quality of those builds aren't anywhere near as good as the commercial equipment other providers use.

We stille have one server ion OVH, it is on Directadmin, but in the 6 years we run this server never had a single issue. Guess i might be lucky.. :-) :

I have had several dedicated servers with OVH over the years and only ever had one issue on a low end Kimsufi atom server used for remote backups (which you can't expect much from anyway) from memory it was a power supply. The fault was fixed quickly.

I have 1 server with them now that has had no hardware issues at all since deployment early last year.
Support times can be long though however only contacted a few times, if you don't need support they have the best price for dedicated servers in Australia though.
