Depends how you define that, I dont think anyone assumes it would be over a WAN nor it "would be", after all, you can run 5 MySQL servers in the same dc, same switch and LAN.
Along with the upcoming feature to run inter-cluster traffic via private interfaces, which I am sure there will be just as many people doing this on the same LAN as via VPN/Wireguard/etc.
All baby steps to making that a possibility... adding Ceph management to Enhance years down the road to do this, HAproxy/keepalived and so on. Completely plausible and realistic.
