How did you set up your backup server(s)

We currently have a Hetzner auction server, but we see that the disks are to slow, We have approximately 6TB in incremental Backups for our clients.

I had the same issue with slow disks on Hetzner auction servers.
Instead of keeping everything on a single machine, I switched to two Storage VPS from AlphaVPS, each with 4TB.

At around €16/month per VPS, it actually works out cheaper than running an auction server, and the performance (I/O) is much more consistent. I just split my clients between the two VPS to balance the load.

If you go with AlphaVPS, I believe those Storage VPS are now only available in London, but so far it’s been working very well for me.

cPFence how did you set-up the storage VPS in enhance without root access and it is not a VPs. Care to share that with us.

cPFence Am also using it, it works fine also the support! they reply immediately. even if i tell to to run apt if the mirror is not responding well. however i have also installed SMB:// to also dump the entire image of each server on the same interserver vps. of 1TB.

Same issue here with Hetzner. Those HDDs are old and painfully slow.
Anyone tried Servarica?

wav3front I have, it seems to depend on whether you are provisioned on an older server, or newer one. Backup from mid-atlantic to their CA data center seems pretty good.

Yes, I'm using them in Montreal. The network based slices of nvme (whatever they are) did work a lot better than the AlphaVPS stuff, and each extra 125GB slice you get extra RAM as well. However, I don't see any being available anymore though, not sure what's happening there.

I'm currently running about 8 VM's from them (UniFied Slims from a previous Black Friday), and also have a dedicated server with them. (AMD EPYC 7K62 / 48 Cores @ 2600 MHz / 128 GB RAM)

I can also say good things about InterServer.. although I'm mostly on ServaRica now.

cPFence I had already looked into it and it seems interesting, but not having a location in Europe makes things complicated — both in terms of proximity and GDPR.

I even have a DNS server in the US and, honestly, I’m still evaluating its GDPR implications. Between a DNS server and backups outside the EU, backups are clearly more sensitive — so I’m taking my time to analyze this carefully before deciding.

Pick a Objectstore:
€ 5,32 per TB for grade B Objectstore at Hetzner (might be to slow)
€12,29 per TB for grade A- Objectstore at Scaleway (probably good enough)
€ 56,32 per TB for grade A++ Objectstore at Cyso Cloud

Add a VPS:
€ 5 - €15 for a simple VPS

I parked the backup server at a home lab with a 4 TB ssd. But still with good specs works fine for me.
