Backup Role on CIFS

Hello, I'm trying to use an Hetzner Storage Box mounted on a VPS as a backup role. But I'm getting error during backup.
I read here https://enhance.com/docs/backup-role/installing-backup-role.html that NFS\CIFS\etc can't be used. I thought the brtfs limit was removed with v12. Is this still a thing?
Is there any solution for using a mounted storage box? maybe sshfs or something else?

BTRFS requirement was removed in v12 but the backups still won't work over NFS due to hard link restrictions.

I'm not sure about sshfs, not something I've tried but it probably won't work either.

The other solutions to get this working on a storage box are messy and unstable, the best solution is to use a VPS or server.

But hard links are supported by CIFS AFAIK.
What other cheap storage providers are out there?
Also is there a command to manually start the backup and test if it's working?

It's up for debate, some people reporting performance issues with BTRFS, while EXT4 misses many features due to being old.

BTRFS created with --csum xxhash can run the checksumming up to 50% faster, depending on hardware. Mounting with noatime (plenty of online sources for this) and compress=zstd:1 (less reading and writing, more CPU use -> great on slow HDD) can make further big performance improvements. Whatever proper linux filesystem you choose will work though, as long as it's not something crazy like NFS/Samba/FTP/PigeonFS or whatever some people built to use disks far removed from their server.

cPFence Thanks, I'm looking for something in EU. Maybe I'll just get a dedicated auction server from Hetzner or a Kimsufi/SYS from OVH at this point. Around 20€ for 8TB.

EXT4 is definitely our filesystem of choice with enhance. To run a backup job manually, enable the feature in settings > packages and then the "Backup Now" button will appear in the backups tab of each website. You can also trigger it through the API.

rdbf BTRFS hits limits eventually.. EXT4 the only limit we have seen hit is INODES.
