Approaches to rebooting

Hey all

What are your approaches to rebooting your servers with client sites? I am being prompted that my kernel is out of date. I have seen an old discussion on here about live kernel patching but I'm not sure what the standard practice is? Are you just rebooting manually 'out of hours'?

I'm small enough that rebooting outside normal business hours works. Doesn't work for a very high traffic ecommerce site where 2-5 minutes are lost sales. But at that point wordpress and non HA hosting shouldn't be used anyway.

JohnB I am the same, I am so small fry rebooting any time in the evening or weekend isn't an issue. However, I tend to schedule reboots early mornings.

I would tend to agree with the above. I normally update and reboot in the wee hours so there's not many issues, as i'm now small fry. I did have bigger clients at one time, and I would contact them and warn them that I would have to perform "Essential maintenance" on the server they were being hosted on such & such a day at XXX O'clock and their site will be down for the smallest of time whilst I effect the security patches. As long as you pre warn your customers I can't see any issues as they can plan for it also. Good luck! 👍

And this is actually a positive. They get reminded that you take care of things.

musedbynam To apply critical updates that require some sort of restart. It's rare you'd need to do this in a big production environment, but occasionally there may be instances whereby you need to reboot your server (Kernel and Firmware upgrades for example).
