I would like to suggest a central DNS management section for platform administrators.
I actually like Enhance’s DNS architecture, especially distributed DNS across multiple servers and the automatic handling of DNS records when websites are moved between servers.
What I find cumbersome is that DNS management is tied to individual websites in the user interface.
A simple example:
- domain.com already exists as a website and has DNS enabled.
- I create subdomain.domain.com as a separate website, possibly on another server.
- Afterwards, I need to leave that website, find the website containing domain.com, open it and go to its DNS settings just to add or modify the record for the new subdomain.
- In some setups, the parent domain may even belong to a different customer/organisation, making this even more cumbersome.
From a platform administrator’s perspective, I don’t really need DNS to be reorganised internally. I would simply like a top-level DNS section that gives me access to all DNS zones managed by the Enhance cluster.
For example:
DNS → Zones → domain.com → Records
The list could contain all domains for which Enhance DNS is enabled, regardless of which website, customer, organisation or server they belong to.
Useful information in the overview could include:
- Domain / DNS zone
- Organisation/customer
- Associated website
- Server
- DNS status
- DNSSEC status
This would make common administrative tasks much easier without necessarily changing Enhance’s existing website or DNS architecture.
As an additional feature, it would also be useful to support DNS-only zones which are not associated with a website. But even without that, having a central DNS overview for platform administrators would already be a significant usability improvement.
One of Enhance’s strengths is that DNS can be managed centrally across a multi-server setup. I think the UI should reflect that by providing platform administrators with a central place to manage it.
