Cool, will review the roadmap, so maybe in a year this will be production ready for us. Also hilarious, I looked at the roadmap last week and when I saw July, I straight up though you stopped rolling out updates, because this is completely backwards if you think about it.

There is a lot less of a performance difference than there was a while ago.

In the benchmarks that we ran internally MariaDB was slightly faster, but really the difference for most sites was tiny.

I can't say I've ever seen it outperform MariaDB for modern WordPress sites with millions of page views monthly. That being said, database performance is often attributed to proper configuration for the application.

Same thoughts here. Unless your DB is absolutely huge it is not often going to be a major deciding factor in site/app speed.

Between MySQL and MariaDB there is no significant difference I think. What we need more is a database cache, such as Redis/KeyDB.

Except that we use MariaDB and aren't switching to MySQL8, nor are we taking a hit on performance across 100 million page views just because. So it definitely varies company to company needs wise.

@Zoinkies Only out of box. Well configured MySQL8 is as fast at MariaDB 10.11.4 or Percona. I have found InnoDB clusters to be more stable than Galera Clusters or Percona XtraDB Clusters.

As I understand it, the main difference is that MariaDB was forked from MySQL 5.7 and therefore still contains the query cache which is beneficial on some workloads.

Also we have seen some compatibility issues with importing cPanel backups which were generated on MariaDB servers and therefore it's important that we support MariaDB for users who are doing mass migrations from cPanel so they can ensure the best possible compatibility.

The reason it's been delayed is the complexity of supporting MySQL 8 and MariaDB side by side.
