I agree the double click to enter a folder feels a little strange. Additionally because of that behaviour I somehow then expect that if I double click on a file then I will enter a file editor, but I don't.
I would personally also prefer a list view by default, but I imagine that a lot of clients would prefer the icon view, so I don't see that it is going to be possible to make everyone happy either way around.
