phpMyAdmin slow response when crossing servers within the cluster

Hello everyone! First of all, wish you all a very nice healthy and successful new year!

I have come crossed this speed problem of phpMyAdmin. I searched the forum and saw nobody mentioning the similar problem, so I opened this thread to see if there would be any solution to it.

If I'm not misunderstanding, all the activities done with phpMyAdmin are going through the control panel server, right? So here's what I've experienced: My CP server is in EU, then, I have a test Webserver in EU, and 2 test Webservers in US. When I tried to use phpMyAdmin to modify a database hosted on the EU server, the speed is still ok. But when I tried to modify a database hosted on the US server, it usually take 10+ seconds to open an each page in the phpMyAdmin. It took also forever long for phpMyAdmin to export a sql dump of lower than 1MB to download. I also tested the db export function within Enhance panel for the same server and same database, the speed was still acceptable.

I also did another test completely new, from a CP server in US and Webservers in US and EU. This problem stay the same.

So, I'm not sure if this is indeed some kind of bugs or if it's just like that with phpMyAdmin. However, when I was using other web hosting services in the past, I never had this kind of speed problems with their phpMyAdmin. Is there maybe the possibility that every user can use phpMyAdmin directly from the server which their websites are on?

bgeek You're correct, phpMyAdmin is currently only available on the control panel server. Steps to improve this are already underway, with plans to roll out functionality similar to how webmail works.

If no DNS is set the customer will access phpMyAdmin through the centralised system. IF set customers will be able to locally access phpMyAdmin on mysql.{their_domain} (for example).

yep, we have a ticket about it, if control panel is too far from the clients server with app-db app, the phpmyadmin it's hard to use.

we hope is changed soon.

PhpmyAdmin is really slow, when the control panel is in EU and the server is in US or Asia.
Clients are getting frustrated due to this now!

It's been quite some time since the last update in this ticket.
We are facing this issue and it is still affecting our work. Sometimes we wait more than 5 minutes to load as the control panel and the other servers are in different data centers.

Do you have any updates on this how can be solved or any suggestions?

You will soon be able to automatically deploy phpMyAdmin on every app server and the SSO from the panel will continue to work.

In the meantime there are possible workarounds:

Manually create a phpMyAdmin for each location. Your customers will need to sign in manually.
Create a separate cluster for each continent. For instance the latency from Paris to Amsterdam should be fine for phpMyAdmin but the latency from London to Sydney might not.

Just found this thread, now I know why speed gets slow at times when working between servers.
I have the controller and backups in Australia (different states) and the others across the ocean here in NZ it is only about 40ms latency but it still makes a difference.

Sydney <----> Melbourne 12ms
Sydney <----> Auckland 40ms
to Auckland South 41ms

yep, we also have the CP in Country A and some web Server in country B or C, and the phpmyadmin is unusable.

Update......
It seems that if you have a DB intense site such as a page builder, the distance from the controller server causes lag as well. Not just in phpmyadmin. can anyone else confirm this?

I have a dev site here in New Zealand but the controller is in Melbourne, Australia. When using a live page builder theme (Ronixa) on Opencart 3.4.0 PHP 8.1 and OLS, moving items would lag and become unresponsive.
for a few minutes or crash at times. this server only has 1 extra site on

I tried Mysql 8, MariaDB 11 and no difference between thim until now. I migrated the Opencart site to a VPS in the same location as the controller (Melbourne) just now and there is no lag at all and everything is instant, even just on 1 Core and 2GB Ram with OLS and unoptimised DB.

Latency between the control panel server and the app server won't make a difference to website performance. However if the database server is remote from the web server, this could cause poor performance if the latency is high. Enhance will always place the database locally to the web server if the database role is installed and placement is enabled.

Adam The database server is on the same server as the app server in both tests, manually assigned from when the site was first installed to enhance. then manually assigned in the migration between locations.

The only difference is the distance from the control panel server.
Cloudflare is used for DNS without proxy and everything else disabled.

I think this is coincidental, there must be something else causing the poor website performance. Maybe the server is i/o limited or the my.cnf is suboptimal.

Regarding slow phpMyAdmin with geographically diverse servers, it does depend a lot on the operation being carried out. General database admin should be fine but large SQL imports might be problematic. For example if you import an SQL file via the Enhance panel, it will upload the entire sql file to the web server and execute it locally as the website user and therefore it isn't sensitive to high latency. However, when you import with phpMyAdmin, I believe it executes each query individually. Therefore, if you have 0.1ms latency and 100,000 queries, the file would take 10 seconds to execute whereas with 50ms latency it would take 5,000 seconds or 83 minutes.

it's pretty much any action (already discussed this on a ticket with Enhance), not just a large sql import, pretty much any click.

For clients that NEED phpMyAdmin now, it can still be manually installed on a user by user basis into one of their sub-directories (or subdomains) with one of their database users.

Even small amounts of latency seems to be catastrophic for phpMyAdmin, it really just needs to be installed on the same server as the database.

There is a wordpress plugin for it too. Can't speak for the security of said plugin.

Yes, it’s extremely necessary to have phpmyadmin on the same server/all servers as the latency is really killing us. With servers spanned across several continents it is becoming difficult day by day.
