502 Bad Gateway on wp-admin

Getting a 502 error when trying to login to sites today. It's on most sites on multiple servers. Restarting the individual php containers fixes it. Anyone else seeing this issue?

twest This has happened to me on other occasions and it was the reason why the ssl is invalid return erro 502.

Check if ssl is being revalidated correctly something related.

Update: if I go to website.com/login that's when I get the 502. Iof I try going directly to /wp-login.php then it's no problem... Wtf? Why is the redirect from /login failing unless I restart php container? Bizzare! At least it's a relief that the wp-admin area isn't actually DOWN, it's just that /login redirect apparently.

Write more information about which web server you are using? It would be best if you report the bug on my.enhance.com.

DracoBlue it's happening on enterprise litespeed, yes I did report it already - I just posted here to see if anyone else faced the same issue for brainstorming.

Does /wp-login/ work?

It’s a long shot, but the 8G firewall rules from
perishablepress block /login by default now as well. Maybe ELS have something similar now?

xyzulu /wp-login/ redirects to 404. It seems to just be /login/ that causes the 502. Going to /wp-login.php works.

I didn't run updates recently, so shouldn't have been a change in ELS since it was working fine yesterday, I must have logged into at least 20 sites yesterday at /login and no problem.

It was most concerning because I first ran into this issue on a colleagues Enhance setup, they also running ELS, then I discovered it happened on my cluster as well. It would be easy to think it's a Cloudflare change, but then it doesn't really make sense that the problem goes away after restarting the php container on a site.

I'm stumped, for now.

xyzulu hasn't returned yet, cross my fingers... I didn't restart every container though, need some for testing at least.

DracoBlue no modsec, I gave up trying to get that configured so it wouldn't conflict with every other basic WordPress feature. Gave up after my exclusions list was getting ridiculously long, so many exclusions I couldn't even tell what it was actually protecting anymore, if anything.

Do you have mod_security enabled? If so, try disabling it and check if the issue has disappeared.

A whole site was 502 today. I don't think it was one that I had restarted PHP yesterday. I'm gonna post this on ELS forums, seems like it's an issue in Litespeed.

I don’t think it’s just LS OLS but NGINX as well. I’ve had four or five customers report random 502.

Zoinkies it may be time to head back to Apache :/

That will be such a friggin mess and waste of hours to get setup, migrating back to php-fpm bleh.

Definitely something in common, I’ve have a handful of 502 reported and using NGINX. Weird coincidence that others are reporting 502 on different web servers. It’s only been recently I’ve started getting 502, like last update.

Zoinkies yes I've been looking trying to find a commonality. All sites are Cloudflare, but not all sites were affected (I would say 75% affected).

I did recently run the latest updates for Enhance, but I'm not sure it's related. The 502s seem to have started a couple days after I ran updates, so everything was fine for a couple days as far as I can tell.

It seems odd that a PHP restart on each container fixes it. I've got such an anxiety now wondering if it will come back, or if it was a one off thing... Just recently finished migrating 300 sites into the cluster, so I'm REALLY not interested in rocking the boat too much.

I'm going to test switching webserver back to Apache on one server and see what happens. I have 1 site I left in the "broken state" so I can test. But, I imagine switching webservers probably triggers a PHP restart, so not really sure how thorough a test this will be.

Of course if the 502s come back on sites I already restarted then I'm going to have to think about drastic action.

If the 502 is coming from the web server (rather than Cloudflare or some other proxy) and it goes away when you restart PHP then it's almost certainly related to the website hitting its hard resource limits. Try raising them, assuming you have them set.

If it's happened suddenly then consider scanning the site for malware.

Adam it's happened on two different clusters, and I'm sure not all of them have hit their resource limits, especially on the other cluster as its limits are set extremely high while hosting very small sites.

It's affected around 75% of websites on the clusters id estimate.

The 502 error page is a Cloudflare error page, so I'm not sure if something updated on cloudflares side that could affect things. But that wouldn't explain why some sites (also on cf) went unaffected. Also not sure how a cf change would cause a 502. To me it seems like an issue with lsphp communicating with litespeed, hence the php restart fixing it.

Yea I’m sure it’s not a resource limit issue I overrided a site which had 502 and it didn’t fix it.
