Website email when mail server down

As the web server sends through the mail server, if they are on different servers and maybe in different locations. What happens when the website tries to send an email when that is down, being upgrades or otherwise up.

Does it queue on the web server until it is able to deliver or does it just error and potentially cause a generic code error.

If using the PHP mail() function then that function will return an error, it's up to the PHP code to handle that exception.

From version 11.0.0 PHP mail() will use the local MTA even if the mail server for that website is remote, making it more similar in functionality to cPanel/Plesk. You can still configure a smart host if required.

Yes they will if dkim is enabled on the domain.
