Install / force / require a MU plugin by default

Hello team,

I am interested in finding a way to automatically install, require, or force a MU plugin on all WordPress installs. Is this currently possible? Is there a scripting method to achieve this? Where should I begin looking into this?

Additionally, are there any deployment methods to apply changes to all sites hosted on a cluster?

For example, if I want to update a certain plugin on all sites at once or in a specific order, is that possible?

Could we potentially use Ansible or similar solutions?

I would appreciate any feedback or input on this matter.

Rich I think they should upgrade this so we can upload custom files.
Also none of the pre-installs would be a MU plugin.

What I have been doing is, i have one "STAGING site" that's setup with everything i want, the way i like. I just keep CLONING that to other domains etc. works fine so far.

I have 1 MU Custom Plugin on all customer sites.

Did you try looking at the API? I think it has the possibility of doing what you want.

Also if you have an officially supported package in wordpress.org you can set Plugins and Themes to pre-install via packages.

That plugin could move itself upon activation, if you really didn't want to mess with the enhance API or at least act as an activation hook for your use case. I don't think there is any activation hooks that could be used to call a script when installing within enhance itself... but if you apply it to all your packages, then this might fit your brief

Be careful.. cloning a dev site does not copy the cronjob over.. just a small thing I have noticed. Might need to be reported to Enhance.

xyzulu Yes, but the enhance crons actually cause lots of wordpress errors. Particularly with template imports. and Gutenberg get sa lot of issues with it. SO i use the default wordpress cron.

Interesting.

Thank you all for your feedback. I'll do some tests with cloning. A custom deployment would also be a great way! Having the possibility to deploy my own custom app/version of customized WordPress would be great.

Also, is it feasible to "own" this custom MU plugin by another user (my own) to prevent the client from removing or editing it?

cristianuibar ooo that's a good idea - i never tried that. Please let me know if it works okay. I'll do that too - but i guess if we did that my technique of cloning the site would probably fail

slimx Yes, but the enhance crons actually cause lots of wordpress errors.

Enhance are not special.. they just implement the wp-cli cron by default. Honestly, I prefer it 100% of the time to the regular Wordpress cron (web triggered) method. It's your choice, but please don't share misinformation that Enhance does anything "unusual" here (by implementing the wp-cli cron) or that it results in errors.

I agree with you. Dedicated server CRON jobs are totally way better then default WP cron jobs.

I used to configure these via the wp-cron.php file like this:
php /path-to-wordpress/wp-cron.php

Now since switching to Enhance, I use the WP CLI method.
