manu the coin has other side too. I know quite few people who wanted to contribute but was strike down.

One example, I can't remember the name, but he created nice flow for a theme to make FSE better and much nicer. Core team behind theme development stopped the theme from getting into repo for free, cause "it should've been a plugin not a theme and it offera too much different experience from default WordPress ".

So the core team does have their own visions and motives and as shown they strike down any progress that they want to. And then we see questions like "why don't you contribute"

sikmo yes I remember. The theme was then released through github. I dont recollect the name though. It's high time WordPress Community, Service Providers, Developers, Automattic and core team sit together and get the expectations right and get to a common ground. It cannot be randomly dictated as per will as too many lives are dependant on WordPress.

manu I think they are trying to paint it as an issue of them not contributing back, but it's really about revenue and competition. They rolled out their VIP hosting platform this year at CloudFest in Austin. (they bragged about how the control panel runs on the same engine as WP, and I'm like, how gross, why would you want a hosting control panel based on a blog engine? Not a benefit)

I'm betting they aren't getting the pick up from the VIP product they wanted and folks are still staying on WPE, and that's what is really driving this.

Exactly my thoughts but even here there are people who want Wordpress integration even though its a horrible idea from security and just about every other standpoint.

If you're a hammer all you see are nails. I wouldn't trust a hosting company like this

To me it screams classic enshitification. Owner / board members / CEO's whatever at some point are like "yeah we are making a profit but what can we do to make a lot more profit THIS year." Its always shortsighted and its never "invest a lot of money this year to make our product better than competitors" its more "screw the customers but just enough that most won't leave"

xyzulu wpengine doesn't pull their weight and isn't good hosting. That's their right as the license is GPL.

Matt is right to be frustrated with them but his actions are childish and unacceptable. He'll say anything at this point to avoid the legal consequences.

It's the beginning of the end I hope because alternatives to WordPress could be soo much better much more easily than WordPress will fix it's core problems. But it requires people disliking WordPress more first.

I can not put my finger on it, but I feel that wp-engine is a Cpanel (Oakley Capital) style where it does not matter what you do as long as the $ target is reached. These people damage whatever they touch for cash 🙂

Asking for a cut of a competitors revenue doesn't seem professional.

Even if Wordpress is right and WPEngine needs to pay up... Its unacceptable to take action that punishes the innocent users with no notice. It might "just" be updates and its easy enough to get around but its the principle of the matter. If they think this is okay it won't end at just updates.

Matt is all "we are used by BILLIONS we are building something that will be around for a long time" but doesn't act the part.

One smart way to compete would be to offer an enhanced/special wordpress edition ONLY available with their managed hosting. Then you actually have something other hosts won't have. But that would require innovation and they seem to think a block builder is peak innovation so....

JohnB Agreed.

It's not like there haven't been other open source blog engines/cms platforms that have forked and the original is dead/gone. (actually funny, digging into this, WP started as a fork of b2)

Slightly off topic... I've not read the terms or anything, but I have a few open source plugins on .org, yet their commercial domain (which shows the same plugin) has this exact terminology in their plugin directory:

Sorry, what? My open source plugin is free if someone subscribes to their product? And sometimes their commercial domain comes up first before .org (which was a whole uproar with developers in 2023). Our hands are unfortunately tied.

At the end of the day, it's all about corporate entities and how they market to the end-user. Screw the nice guys!
