Sensible folder names in website directory

At present when a website is created it gets a directory created under /var/www which is a 36 digit random string.

When you're looking for a website to work on (like rsync some files in for example) then it can take ages to find the directory.

Even a symlink so that mycustomersdomain.com>>123456789123456789123456789123456789 would help.

In the meantime, you can try this to locate website directories quickly:

cat /etc/passwd | grep /var/www

This command shows all users linked to /var/www, and if you're looking for a specific user:

cat /etc/passwd | grep /var/www | grep username

It might make finding the corresponding directories slightly easier until a solution like symlinks is implemented.

Two other methods are to poll the API and get the id or login to the CP and look at the website in question, note the UUID in the url. It's the same one your looking for.

I use the later method all the time, I'd use the first if I needed this programatically.

Another useful tip: You can go to the Enhance Control Panel, then navigate to the Manage Websites page. Click on the search icon located at the top right, enter your website ID (/var/www/website_id_here), and press enter. You will then see the domain in the search results!

We're also adding a CLI utility to enter a website container by domain, which should be quite a big time saver. Until then, looking in /etc/passwd is a good solution. You should always ssh or su to the website user to work on websites, never do it as root. If you connect with SSH, you will automatically be placed in the correct directory.

The website paths won't change, they are deliberately based on the websiteId as mapped domains will change but the websiteId is always static, even after a server migration.
