Is there a way to change from MySQL to MariaDB for a Database role on a server?

I'd say you just need to remove the DB role and add it again, choosing MariaDB this time.

Would this not lose databases for websites already allocated to the database role?

If you have version 12.0.0 then you can probably hack this by dumping your databases, manually uninstalling mysql-server, installing mariadb-server and re-importing the data. This would be an unsupported action.

The official way would be to move the databases to another server, remove and re-install the database role then move them back.

Adam Yes, he answered before I posted. I think moving the db role only is the best.

It will cause data loss. The best fix would be setting up a new server with the DB you want, then migrate the sites to that new sever and decommission the old one. Alternately, you can use the new server to hold the sites for you temporarily, then install the desired DB on the old server and move the sites back.

wenani This works and is what Adam suggested to us in a ticket last year. We changed from mysql to MariaDB. It was a bit tedious to move the sites all over then back, but it worked without too much trouble.
