Best way to set up a dedicated backup server with multiple HDDs?

Hi everyone,

At the moment I have my backups running every two hours and spread across two VPS from AlphaVPS. However, I've been experiencing frequent accessibility issues with those backup servers, which makes the whole process unreliable.

I'm now considering moving to a more solid setup: a dedicated server at Hetzner, with several disks — one SSD for the operating system and multiple HDDs dedicated solely to backups.

My question is:
Does anyone here run this kind of setup (dedicated server + multiple HDDs) for Enhance backups?
And more importantly, how should I mount and structure the backup directory on the HDDs so that Enhance can write to it without issues?

This is an area I’m not very familiar with, so any practical guidance would be greatly appreciated.

webdig I use Hetzner and they are amazing. I have a few Dedis with them (Currently on DA) and for £45 (about 50 Euro or 55 Dollars) you can pick up a bare metal server, 64GB RAM+ with 2x8TB hard drives for backups. This way you have full control over the backup software, style and transfer protocols.

If you go for something like Hetzner Storage Box (1TB, 5TB etc...) they are solid storage, but a pain to configure with certain software as its SFTP on port 23, you can't log in via SSH on 22, and you've limited commands when you do get in. A positive though is they support Borg Backup there on their storage boxes and i've found a GUI as as well for Borg i'm going to trial shortly when i get a few minutes. Good luck buddy!

I use it and looks ok, maybe I’m new and just did’t have a problems that you guys have.

We have this setup for enhance and entire VPS servers backups.
Dedicated servers with HDDs configured with RAID, but in our case as these servers used as generic backups we created on them VM for enhance backups only and configured with Enhance Cluster.

Take a look at mdadm which is software RAID in Linux, it will allow you to build a RAID array with your disks. It’s usually best, although not a requirement, to set this up during the installation of the operating system.

How many disks do you have and what is the size?

The disks would then become one logical volume which you could mount as /backups, for example and then point Enhance towards this mount point.

You use a solid VPS and attach a block storage from hetzner or other providers to it if the disk space is the issue. You don't need a dedicated server resources for a backup server, and can always scale up the block storage.
