Moving a domain email service from one server to another is a hoster action, and client should not wake up in the morning and find that things are missing without any action from their end.

I think when moving. A service Enhance should make sure everything is moved and, from the client side, nothing is changed. If this is not the case for now, it should be implemented as a priority and considered a Bug or a miss in the development process.

Hi.

Today a customer reported he has no contacts on his Roundcube. Nor signature.

2 days ago I updated to 10.2.0.
After that I moved all email accounts from around 25 websites to a new mail server.

What am I facing here?
May all my customers have lost their contacts and signatures?
Or, like @Adam said, if they use the central webmail, they still have the contacts?

The central webmail retains contacts regardless of which mail server the customer is on. The per-server webmail at https://mail.customerdomain does not retain contacts during a server move. However they can almost certainly be moved manually.

If the destination server is a fresh server which had no previous customers, you could copy the entire sqlite database. It is stored in ~roundcubelocal/db.sqlite on both servers, just copy it from one to the other but make sure it remains owned by the roundcubelocal user. If you need to merge the contacts from 2 servers then please send a support ticket and we will try to assist.

In future a role migration through Enhance will copy the contacts, we're aware this is a functionality gap.

I was not aware of this, and after I confirmed the email accounts were moved, I remove the mail role on the original server.
I can see it still has roundcubelocal/db.sqlite , but not sure if the contacts are still there.
How can I check?

Why is it setup to have two separate roundcube installations? I was under the assumption the mail subdomain would just redirect to the central roundcube. Or is there a setting somewhere we can disable a local roundcube per domain?

The mail subdomain points to the mail server on which the customer's email role is placed. Originally it just provided POP/IMAP/SMTP capabilities but webmail was added by very popular request as an alternative to the central webmail where the servers were far apart (geographically or in terms of network toplogy) as it gives much better performance.

Adam Thanks for clearing that up! Maybe a toggle so it redirects to the central webmail would be a nice feature in the future, when you guys got time. 😉

They will still be there, removing the email role doesn't remove the local roundcube website. But you can access the database with the sqlite3 utility.

After @Adam pointed me into the right direction, it was fairly easy to solve it.
I just had to replace db.sqlite file on the new email server with the one from the old server.

Nothing, to my knowledge; we are all waiting for the big email update. Let's hope it is done in a way that things will get right and the email side of the software will perform as expected so we can offer reliable and professional email services.

I did not test as I did not have the opportunity. I have had other issues like emails sent from the server can only be monitored in a log file, made to be read by Robots with strong analytical capabilities, and it is not user-friendly 🙂

I was looking at what is missing and how I can complement it, like AWSTATS or something similar for now.

I guess the big issue is that we want a lot of services to work, but then we realise getting email or hosting or anything else going is the easy part in default mode. The big challenge is Monitoring tools, Configurations in UI implementation, and Logs are probably 70% of the work but were not considered as we were making the wrong requests 🙂

The saying is true, "You only know what you had, after you lose it", and I guess cPanel or Plesk are "bloated" on top of services with a lot of useful analytical tools that people consider it is standard in the industry but in reality was hard work to implement by developers, especially when nothing else was there to copy 🙂

Time will fix things, with a loooot of patience and hard work 🙂
