Kosta Plenty of dedicated servers and even some VPS providers satisfy all data protection laws in the USA. Can't speak for the insanity that is the data "protection" laws in Europe.

You are correct that renting space in a datacenter with your own hardware is less likely to be randomly suspended than renting a dedicated server. That said, not everyone operates at the scale that makes this affordable. It doesn't automatically make them low quality.

A provider that rents quality VPS's/dedis + good disaster recovery and redundancy is more resilient than a provider that is limited to a single datacenter with no redundancy (ie many lowendtalk providers)...

JohnB I've rented HIPPA compliment Dedi's in the USA before. I've always preferred to be agile over maximum profit making. Any DC / Upstream hosting company can suspend you, for whatever stupid reason. Plan your infrastructure right and you'll be resilient and reliable. VPS's have their place, but I don't like not having control of the actual sever... again it's what the requirements and budget dictate, not my wishes and wants.

You can buy your own hardware, leave spare parts with the DC you colo at and think you're resilient, but any DC can have its own disaster... if it's taken out, so's your rack(s) full of clients. How agile are you at that point? For each server I rent I can easily go rent 3 more anywhere in the world within a heart beat. I have at least a dozen hosting company accounts already setup and verified... global DNS propagation is my slowest problem and I can't do much about that.

JohnB I don’t have customers I am planing to start on 3 DCs/ quarter racks to get it going and later upgrade with new racks and new DCs. Yeah Europe seems bit more complicated with data laws…

Hetzner auction servers seem good for projects that don't need the best of reliability. The hardware you get is used but they don't specify how used up it is sadly. A lot of things can go wrong hardware wise.

Another thing you have to consider is that you need to almost constantly monitor that machine for any hardware failures. Hetzner won't fix anything until you point it out.

Personally I just go with a dedicated VPS mainly because I don't have to deal with those inconveniences.

Rich I will make it resilient, that’s way I am spending 1 year in research and development to be resilient to anything that comes… community here helps. I just need iso and nis2 to comply they will fine tune my resilience…

Rich Agreed! agile, agile, agile, agile - we, as an agency (not a hosting business), hosted with a 3rd party before, and it was ok, but now we have decided to get rented dedi's via Hetzner - In the long term, we will save money compared to paying for hosting with a 3rd party, and we control the quality of the infra 😃 and one day, when we need more or less, we can just downscale or upscale as needed.

Cashflow is so important these days for any business, so we are not taking any chances on high upfront costs when we get quality infra for a solid monthly price 😃

Kosta Good luck Kosta! It's an ambitious plan, but one that will pay off in the end. As they say if you aim for the tree tops, you might just get off the ground, aim for the stars and you'll at least get past the tree tops. 🙂

I love how with Enhance its easy to setup a agile hosting solution. The entire east coast could be nuked right now and the sites on those servers would be up again on the west coast in under 30 minutes.

More realistically Heztner could decide to suspend me for some reason. No problem I am verified on multiple providers and will just spin up instances with them and create a highly ranking page bashing heztner in one of those instances.

Protip: control panel server should be with a different provider than the webservers. One backup location at least should not be affiliated with any of the other providers used. This way, if a company suspends your whole account (Vultr likes to do this if a single server is "compromised") you haven't lost your backups, control panel, AND websites.

Kosta Until now I just managed clients one on one with Zoho Books and manual actions on the servers, but I recently brought a Belsta lifetime license, so starting on setting that up this year.

I'am just interested as to what each selects. WHCMS is the usual go to for people.

JohnB Very true, although the speed of your backup servers is very important in this case, because it could also take forever to restore accounts from a slow backup server. Then there is propagation also.

JohnB As fast as the local ISP cache * whistles 😆 I do love CF for the enhance-CF integration and being the biggest reverse proxy on the planet though.
