I get that Enhance want to attract new customers, and perhaps even those who are not skilled server admins.. but the increase of "useless" (in my opinion) posts as well as the fact these forums are not as well moderated as they could be is really frustrating me.

I have 20+ years of server admin experience and continue to work in this field, I am happy to share and help others.. but I hate to have to wade through the more frequent mess here. Either Enhance need to get more involved in keeping conversations constructive and cleaning up the trolls, duplicate users and useless posts.. or things will get even more murky here. I do flag and report things.. but it's only reactive action that happens it seems.

One of the drawcard for Enhance is these forums, and the level of knowledge some people have who are willing to contribute.. but some are being driven away.. at least I am. Maybe I will feel different on another day.. but here is my rant.. šŸ˜‰

xyzulu I think there should be two forums. One for people who think they don't need sysadmin skills and refuse to change their opinion. They want the world and don't even know what they are asking for. I'm so tired of a bunch of feature requests that amount to "I want to just install panel and click buttons and make money. Add more buttons pls"

The other forum for people who know at least the basics.

People call stackoverflow toxic but man did they not tolerate stupid questions. Questions where the person obviously didn't try, for example "how to make mysql fast" would be met with a "toxic" response shaming the person. It was very effective.

If you can't be bothered to use google to learn the basics why should someone spend their time helping you for free?

Public shaming of shameless stupidity is the most effective tool. But this is a forum tied to a commercial product, so I'd understand when the Enhance people wouldn't appreciate that dynamic. And people feel this, so they don't all trash the obvious candidates.

Just someone willing to spend 3 x 10 min a day, given the permission to clean out the bad apples would be enough.

Also, the lack of progress in the last +/- year for the end user is a large part of this. Feature request? Throw it on the big pile for 'some day after v12'. Great idea? On the pile. Security improvement? -> Pile. It doesn't foster any community vibe.

I disagree. I've been part of many hosting related forums, from cpanel to ispconfig and a bunch in-between. Heavy moderation tends to drive users away. Maybe posts would become higher quality technically, but the spirit of 'community' always suffers.

It doesn't have to be a free for all, but people should be welcome to ask dumb questions, and people should be free to crush trolls imo.

Perhaps as a middleground we just need an addon like Ignore Users, then users can filter their feed of anyone they don't like:
        https://discuss.flarum.org/d/20681-friendsofflarum-ignore-users

It's the trolls and duplicate users that are mostly driving me away.. as well as the usual 'never bothered to search' posts.
Perhaps the word moderation is not the best choice..

xyzulu you sound too old for this modern community hahah šŸ˜‰

Kosta I have some serious internet community experience.. managing open source software public forums many times larger than this one. While I assume I am older than you, the behaviour I see here is nothing modern.

xyzulu nice one, I had some experience 20y ago with community online gaming. Cs1.6 servers with forum and community online tournaments etc some website development experience but my dad didnā€™t want to send me to college for software developer or hardware engineer etc so I end up leaving my country and working in construction now to make some money but now I am trying to get back to this kind of stuff again as I am getting old and I donā€™t see myself much longer on construction sites etc.
deff some of you are helpful here, and yes def some of us posting useless stuff. Never get frustrated and serious

xyzulu I appreciate your perspective, and I think you raise some valid points, but I also see things a bit differently in some areas.

While I understand that as someone with 20+ years of server admin experience, some newbie questions might feel repetitive or even frustrating, we all had to start somewhere. These forums should ideally serve as a space for everyone, experienced sysadmins and newcomers alike, to learn and grow. Dismissing those who ask basic questions might discourage people who genuinely want to learn.

That said, I do agree that thereā€™s been an increase in discussions where people donā€™t seem willing to listen or learn, they just want to do things their own way regardless of advice. That can be frustrating for those of us trying to help or maintain constructive conversations. Iā€™ve noticed it too, and I think better moderation could help keep things more focused and productive.

However, I think itā€™s important to recognize that even seemingly ā€œbasicā€ or ā€œstupidā€ questions can also lead to valuable discussions. For instance, take the many conversations weā€™ve had around backups. A simple question like ā€œWhatā€™s the best backup strategy?ā€ might sound naĆÆve at first, but it often opens the door to sharing unique solutions and approaches that even seasoned sysadmins might not have considered. Iā€™ve personally learned a lot from those exchanges.

One thing Iā€™d strongly emphasize is that anyone planning to use Enhance in a production environment should first invest time in understanding Linux, at least the fundamentals. And for goodness sake, stop googling how to start a hosting business.

This is a very good idea - I also wish to block some users with their posts. That would help a lot!

                xyzulu
I feel the same. I dont mind for newbie questions - if they searched the forum before and their topic was not discussed before. But this behaviour is similar on many forums.
What I really dont like are the useless and troll posts like e.g. "Can I run web hosting with 100 $" and other useless stuff and blabla. So the ignore function @twest has suggested would help a lot as it is hard to get rid of these trolls in general.

The simplest solutions is usually the best - ignore things that don't interest you.

I see that many of you have become so accustomed to control that freedom of speech irritates you. Yes, trolls should be banned, and repetitive topics should be removed. I run an online forum myself and know how it is many people do it unintentionally and don't know how to use a forum properly. People using the enhance panel are not only experts but also amateurs, just like users of other software. So, I suggest a bit of distance. You donā€™t have to read every topic. I check in from time to time, read thread titles, and if something doesnā€™t interest me, I mark it as read, and thatā€™s it. I donā€™t have to read everything.

'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder' - I think this applies to posts too. We have users spanning from self proclaimed newbies to industry veterans. Whilst we encourage a basic level of sysadmin knowledge to run an Enhance cluster everyone has to start somewhere. We've had fantastic feedback from users praising the forum as a great place to get support and pick up tips.

Aliysa_Enhance Maybe it would be worth having a pinned rules post, like most forums have. However, I wouldn't pin it and disallow conversation about the rules, members should have the ability to improve and change rules with the support of yourself, and the Enhance team. Poll based rules may be ideal here, but still, a generalised, pinned post with rules would be better. I reckon soon as Enhance grows, this forum will become a main part of Enhance, if it hasn't already. The idea would be maintaining the integrity of this forum as it has been, unlike other control panel services' forums that have become a sess-pit after being very good.

I think moderation of this caliber is pointless because it's always going to happen. I feel like the world has become dim-witted (me included, lol). Just like you, a veteran (or call it old) we've seen a lot. It doesn't just happen in this industry, it happens in every single industry.

Doesn't this forum software have AI integrated which could literally analyze a post before or after it's posted and ask for further information or clarification because their question seems vague?

I tend to only dip into threads that grab my interest from the subject line and ignore all else. Time is money and both are scarce lately (for me at least lol!)

Odd way to attempt to establish credibility by emphasizing your [extensive experience]. The tone comes off as dismissive and condescending. You're directly implying that your opinion matters more than others.

I know plenty of seasoned professionals who are narrow-minded and outdated in their approach. Years of experience != knowing better than others.

Everyone ā€” whether theyā€™ve been in the field for a year or two decades ā€” can contribute to the conversation, and in my opinion, it's important to keep the tone open and welcoming for those seeking help or trying to learn. (Wether you personally believe they are trying to learn or not)

Iā€™d even go so far as to call this post an example of what your thread title is pointing to.

How, they are still slipping through the cracks, despite reporting them?

xyzulu it seems the only acceptable moderation here is action to protect scammers (though admittedly they do remove obvious spambot posts pretty quickly). Useless trolls like "Johnbsdaddy"/Kurgan/et al, should be permabanned including a search of their IP to ban other related profiles. Something like Flarum AutoModerator would be badass, if user gets 10 flags in 24 hours they get suspension, then the community could self-moderate.
