rdbf I thought they were just making btrfs optional as part of the new backups, not actually doing away with it entirely. What the hell? I know there's been a lot of issues with backups in V12, but this is sounding crazy... Goodbye efficient backups?

I'm no expert, but from looking at the backups it seems like on V11 it was making a snapshot, and then using rsync over ssh tunnel to sync the differences between the website folder and the new snapshotted backup folder.

If this is now being done by creating a new backup folder with hardlinks to the previous backup, then running the rsync with the right options should give similar results

It’s still efficient, but not quite on the level of BTRFS. Daily backups should be fine, but those doing backups every 4-6 hours like some here might notice a difference with the new system.

I get why Enhance made the switch—BTRFS isn’t exactly plug-and-play, plus it locks you into a single filesystem, which can be tricky for the average user. The new system is easier and more universal. That said, I personally prefer BTRFS. Having both options available would’ve been the best of both worlds.

cPFence that's what I'm afraid of. Everything I had read up to this point indicated they were making the new less-efficient backups optional, but now it seems they couldn't pull it off and are going with the easier option... Hopefully the hit to resources doesn't require revamping our entire backup strategy again. It was really awesome having very fresh backups available for DR.

We are hijacking this thread.. but there are benefits to using btrfs without snapshots still, not as much I agree.
In any case, I think it might take a ticket after you/we have upgraded to clarify things after a hands on look at how things work in v12

Keep in mind disk space reporting using du etc on btrfs is also very misleading.

For the V12 backups, Total matches Exclusive. The size of each backup equals the size of the website and the new 'snapshots' contain only files, no links, confirming that something is off on the de-duplication, also showing in the incoming Bytes each backup cycle. But Adam knows this, I'm not the only one who reported this.

What I ran was (for a few example website IDs):
find /backups/<id>/ -maxdepth 1 -type d -exec btrfs filesystem du -s {} +

I'd be curious to see what that shows on a V11 backup server, as mine is converted and a mix of btrfs-snapshots and V12-backups and I don't know what it looked like before. Also, emails on V12 are now separate backups. And indeed this has sidetracked the original thread indeed, it could use its own.

edit: on the emails, if there's only 1 address that's empty (only for smtp sending), the interface reports it differently

Thanks for the details. I hope these issues get sorted out soon. I’ve also noticed some users reporting no issues at all, so it’s hard to spot a clear pattern. I guess we’ll need to run our own tests on this one.

The change from BTFS will indeed have an impact, but the question of how large the impact will be remains to be seen, as you would really need to check say 15, 20 or 30 days worth of backups.

If this does indeed impact those of us who require 6 hour backups or more frequent, Then that could be a major wrench in the gears for our current Enhance backup strategy.

Perhaps @Adam could elaborate on this matter once more time has freed up from support & bug squashing.

For us, if the backups are not 100% correct and reliable, we will not advance from v. 11 to v. 12 until that is fully resolved.

We just want to know if in v12, the backups use more storage, or need more resources to run like every 6h ?

If its the storage (20-30% more space), then maybe it will be okay for us, but if its the resources... hmmm It will be an issue.

The impact shouldn’t be huge if it’s done right. JetBackup uses the same technology without issues, and I know some large hosting companies running JetBackups twice daily with no problems. Hopefully, the Enhance team can match that quality, or at least give us BTRFS users the option to stick with the old backup system.
